Extra Special People
Disability affects approximately 61 million, or nearly 1 in 4 (26%) people in the United States and more than one billion people worldwide. Fellows will spend a day with Extra Special People, Inc. an organization that creates opportunities for people with disabilities and their families to engage, connect, and thrive. Fellows will create lasting memories for a very special group of youth in Athens, while taking away lessons on resource mobilization, networking, and organizational sustainability.
Books for Keeps
Books for Keeps is currently growing into a statewide organization, with a mission to ensure that every child served has the tools necessary to retain literacy skills gained during the school year. Books for Keeps wishes no child loses educational ground during summer due to simple lack of access to books. Fellows will work in their warehouse, helping to organize books for their fall book sale, which is a sustaining funding source for their organization.
Athens Senior Hunger Coalition
About 4.9 million senior citizens are food insecure in America. Fellows will work with the Athens Senior Hunger Coalition to prepare meals, learn about food waste and re-purposing, community gardening, and serving a marginalized population.
