Experience in the U.S. So far

What I enjoyed most this week

The Common Leadership Curriculum Exercise: I enjoyed the rope team-building exercise where we had to work together as a team in order to support each other to achieve a common goal. I also enjoyed the exercise where we had to raise the hula hoop, because despite the instructions given, we still did not manage to lift it at the same time, there was a lot of blame game, and some people gave up. I enjoyed it because it showed the dynamics of working with different people.

Some of the new things I learned

I have learned that leadership is about working together as a group which will help us to achieve a common goal. From the activity where we had employees, managers, and directors, I learned that it reflects organizations back home where Directors do not often take input from middle managers and employees but expect them to perform. I played the role of an employee and felt that my input was not valued, and we were not provided adequate instructions. What I learned that I will be able to utilize in the future I learned that as a leader, I must encourage togetherness in order to achieve a common goal. Delegation is important for the effective completion of a particular task and I must be able to follow up to make sure work is done effectively. I also learned that as a leader 1) I must be focused on what I really want to achieve, 2) I must know what I must do to achieve what I want and 3) I must be ready to pay the price fully to get what I want. I also learned that as a leader I must be strategic, intentional and responsive.

Something unexpected I encountered this week

I was not expecting the treatment I received from the Mayor. I was treated very well, he was very welcoming, patient and attentive to my needs and aspirations. I never expected this because its not the same treatment I would get from my mayor back home, who never has time and patience to listen to my needs and ideas.
