This is our 5th week but I still have that feeling of waiting and learning more. It still looks like we are just starting. One of our coverage for the week was learning about adaptive and technical leadership. The key points were managing your environment, placing the work where it belongs and managing yourself. By managing their environmen, leaders need to learn how to observe what is happening to their community initiatives, ability to maintain perspective and understand what people are saying/not saying.
We learned that as leaders we have to place work where it belongs. This means upholding values of teamwork and learning importance of delegation, creating ownership and mobilizing others to solve problems. As we endeavor to bring out the best in people we must also remember to manage ourselves as leaders by mostly avoiding self-destructing during difficult change.
As usual we had group discussion about our community projects and the challenges that each individual faces. It was a very interactive moment that brought out unseen vulnerabilities and abilities of different leaders in their own groups. Discussing different projects, receiving and giving feedback about individual challenges and way forward was really one of the good moments of the week.
On Thursday We spent our Mandela Day volunteering at Books for Keeps where we gained new knowledge and ideas on collecting and delivering books for children. We extended the commemoration to Friday by spending the day at the Centre for ESP (Extra Special People) with kids and adults of special needs. That brought out strong sense and understanding of working with people with different needs and how important volunteers are in daily human progress.
